System Safety Engineer

JOB_DESCRIPTION_

We are seeking an experienced system safety engineer with a background in functional safety to help build out a first-of-its-kind safety case for autonomous yard operations. You will be responsible for setting, monitoring, and enforcing the high standard of engineering development necessary for the safety-critical functioning of a two-body, multi-ton autonomous ground-vehicle system and safe, error-free, effective operation.

Responsibilities:

  • Hazard Analysis: Conduct hazard identification and analysis activities, such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP), to identify potential safety issues in systems and components.
  • Risk Assessment: Evaluate identified hazards and assess associated risks, considering various factors such as probability, severity, and exposure. Develop risk assessment reports and provide recommendations for risk mitigation.
  • Safety Requirements Development: Define and document safety requirements based on regulatory standards, industry best practices, and project-specific needs. Ensure safety requirements are clear, measurable, and traceable throughout the system development lifecycle.
  • Compliance and Certification: Collaborate with regulatory authorities and certification bodies to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations applicable to the industry. Prepare documentation and support certification processes.
  • Safety Implementation: Work closely with engineering teams to implement safety features and design changes. Provide guidance on safety-related design decisions and assess the effectiveness of implemented safety measures.
  • Safety Verification and Validation: Develop and execute safety verification and validation plans to confirm that safety requirements are met. Conduct tests, simulations, and analyses to validate safety controls and measures.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive records of safety analyses, assessments, and implementation activities. Prepare detailed reports and documentation to communicate safety findings and recommendations to stakeholders.

Qualifications/Required:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a System Safety Engineer in a relevant industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety analysis methods and tools, including FMEA, FTA, HAZOP, etc.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations relevant to off-highway, experience with Machine Directive (MD) 2006/42/EC or IEC 62061 Safety of machinery preferred 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey safety-related information to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with safety assessment software tools is a plus.

Qualifications/Preferred:

  • Background developing functional and SOTIF safety requirements and roadmap for an autonomous vehicle
  • Experience leading a system safety team in the development and fielding of a robotic system with safety-critical components
  • Experience with cybersecurity (especially for automated vehicles)
  • MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or other related technical disciplines
  • Work with requirements tools such as DOORS, Polarion, R4J
  • Experience developing L2+ driver support features such as lane centre, etc.
